Editorial policy

The principles we follow so that you can trust what you read here.

Last updated: 31 October 2026

This page explains how Manual do Couro content is produced, reviewed and updated. It applies to every guide and page on the site, in all three editions.

What we publish

We publish practical guides to caring for leather, style advice, buying guides and features on the history, culture and industry of leather. Our articles are written by the Manual do Couro editorial team, in our own words.

How we research

  • We consult technical sources on leather and tanning, UK and European regulations, industry data and material from manufacturers of care products.
  • We draw on the experience of people who work with leather, such as restorers, cobblers, tanners and craftspeople.
  • Figures, laws and historical facts are checked against at least two sources and cited in the text or in the sources section at the end of the article.
  • Where opinions differ, we set out the main arguments on each side.

Adapting to each country

Each guide in the English edition is adapted, not just translated: spelling, units, climate and labelling rules are those that apply in the UK and Europe. When something only applies in Brazil, such as a Brazilian law, we replace it with the rule that applies here or leave it out.

Care advice

Our advice always starts with the gentlest, safest method. Even so, every piece is different: test any product or technique on a hidden spot before using it on the whole piece, and see a professional for valuable or sentimental items, as our terms of use explain.

Updates and corrections

We review our guides regularly. When an article is significantly updated, the date of the update appears at the top. If you find a mistake, write to contato@manualdocouro.com.br: we correct it quickly and, when a correction changes the meaning of something, we say so in the text.

Independence and advertising

  • We do not accept payment to recommend products, brands or shops.
  • Brands are mentioned for their historical or informative relevance, with no commercial relationship.
  • The site shows Google AdSense ads, always labelled "Advertisement" and kept separate from our editorial content. Advertisers have no influence over what we publish.
  • If we ever publish sponsored content or affiliate links, they will be clearly labelled.

Images

Our photographs come from licensed image libraries such as Unsplash, with the photographer credited in the caption. Images illustrate the topic and do not show the specific products, shops or people mentioned in the text.
